Passport changes come into force

The rules surrounding passports and citizenship change today.

People who want to become New Zealand citizens now have to apply for permanent residency first and those seeking residency through a spouse will no longer have preferential treatment.

From 2006, children born to non-permanent resident parents will no longer be able to claim citizenship status. In addition, new passports will only be valid for five years. The changes follow the passage of legislation through Parliament last week.
